Schlitze Surtees, often simply known as Schlitzie, born
Simon Metz in 1901 in the Bronx, New York, and was a unique figure in
the annals of American entertainment. Schlitzie is best remembered for
his role in the groundbreaking 1932 film "Freaks," directed by Tod
Browning. Despite being born with microcephaly, a condition
characterized by a small skull and underdeveloped brain, Schlitzie
became an iconic figure in sideshows and circuses of the early 20th
century.
Schlitzie's early life is shrouded in mystery and uncertainty. Little is
known about his family background or early upbringing. Some reports
suggest that Schlitzie was of Jewish descent and may have been abandoned
by their family due to his condition. However, these details remain
speculative, as records from that era are often incomplete or
unreliable.
Schlitzie's career in show business began at a young age, as he was
often exploited by circus promoters who capitalized on his unique
appearance. Despite the exploitation, Schlitzie found a sense of
belonging within the carnival community, where he was accepted and
celebrated for who he was. His charming personality and childlike
innocence endeared him to audiences across the country.
It was Schlitzie's role in "Freaks" that brought him widespread
recognition and immortalized his legacy. In the film, Schlitzie played
himself, portraying a gentle and endearing character who befriends the
other circus performers. "Freaks" was controversial for its portrayal of
individuals with physical deformities, but it also provided a rare
glimpse into the humanity and camaraderie of those marginalized by
society.
After "Freaks," Schlitzie continued to perform in sideshows and circuses
until his death in 1971. Despite facing numerous challenges and
hardships throughout his life, Schlitzie remained a beloved figure
within the entertainment industry, remembered for his resilience,
warmth, and unwavering spirit. Today, Schlitzie's legacy lives on as a
symbol of acceptance, and the enduring power of the human spirit
